This forum is specifically for us to address questions related to translation issues for GLP. Please post away! If you want to get responses automatically by email, you should be able to subscribe to the forum itself. Post here if you have problems with that.
You can also create a new topic within the translation forum if it's on a specific issue that you think warrants a new thread.

(Some Initital Questions)
1. When we close caption, do we want to leave the caption for the duration of the action or just at the beginning and if so for how long?
for example, let's say a little girl is singing while doing some chores for about 2 minutess. do we have. "[girl singing]" for the whole two minutes or for 2,3,4,5 seconds???
2. When two people are speaking back to back, we are separating with a dash ( - ) right? As in?
-Have you gone?
-I am going!
3. Are we into ellipsis?...

(How to translate document by Shannon Guy)
Thanks for the question, Jason!
Shannon Guy, a stellar GLP volunteer prepared this guide:

Does that cover these questions?

(Problems using dotsub)
Dear deharris,
Sorry to bother you... I know this forum is specifically for translation questions but I am not really used to this webpage... so I have decided to post my question here. :)
I am having problems to see the tutorial in the dotsub page... I have already used 2 different browsers: Mozilla and Explorer - but I had the same problem in both. It seems that a plugin (or something like it) is necessary - but I could not find it anywhere. What should I do? I want to start the transcription/ translation as soon as possible.
Thanks a lot for your attention. :-D
Respectfully, Fernanda

(Download latest version of Firefox)
Thanks so much for your question Fernanda!
Are you using the latest version of Firefox (3.0)? You can download it from www.firefox.com Please try that and let me know if you still have problems. This is the perfect place for your question!
Thanks,
David

(Fernanda, \nAre you working)
Fernanda,
Are you working in dotsub 1.0 or 2.0? I'm curious because I did not initially see a tutorial in 2.0...
Best,
Jason

(As far as I know all our)
As far as I know all our Brazil videos are still only in DotSUB 1.0. I'm hoping they will be transferred sometime in the next few weeks.
Thanks!

(I dunno!!)
Sorry Jason... but I do not know if it's 1.0 or 2.0 - I have checked it out but I could not find it.... Could you tell me where I can get that info?
David... after downloading the Firefox 3.0 I was able to downaload Quick Time(.exe) and it is working fine now.... but I have other questions:
Does it take too long to load the video? (here it is like eternity)
What should I write if I do not understand what they say - because of a loud music or stuff like that?
Thanks a lot for your help....
Fernanda

(One more thing....)
Do you want us to transcribe exactly what they say (even if it is not proper portuguese - like "tiver" instead of "estiver") or must we transcribe grammatically correct?
And when you have a large group of friends....can I translate only the louder sentences and put something like [friends chatting]?
I have already done a lot of transcriptions.... but the way it must be depends a lot on the "client". And, I do not know if you have already noticed but, I am a real perfectionist!
THANKS AGAIN!!

(Unclear speech, grammar, slang questions)
Hi Fernanda!
Thanks for these great questions! I'm glad to hear that you have dotsub up and running! It is 1.0 that you're using, but don't worry about that.
In response to your other questions:
1) Connection speed: Depending on the speed of your connection, it may take some time to load up the video. Sadly, the only thing that you might be able to do about this is to see if you can find a library, school or maybe a friend's office with a faster internet connection to do the work. Sorry!
2) Unclear speech: If you are not sure what is being said, there are two ways to treat the situation:
a. If you think that the speech is so unclear (because of loud music, faint voices, etc.) that it is likely that nobody will ever understand what was said, then just do not transcribe the line.
b. If you can't understand it, but you think that somebody else might understand, then just put ???? into the transcript. When you are done transcribing, your proof reader will look at this, do their best, and if they still don't get it, they will either seek additional help or delete the line by setting the timecode to 00:00:00 and leaving it blank.
3) Grammatically incorrect speech: Transcribe the words as they are spoken. If they are slang, please do transcribe as slang. When you translate, you should make decisions on how to translate this based on our Style Guide.
Thank you for your thoughtful questions! Please post any other questions you have here!!!
-David
