Education Fellow Nicole Pfaff will facilitate three Saturday workshops at 826 Valencia, using the Global Lives Project curriculum, starting January 25th and ending February 8th. The workshop is open to middle school students, and the workshop participants will create either films, photo essays, or written transcriptions by the third session.

In this workshop, the students will take the stories of people they know, (or are about to know) and turn them into different types of writing. They’ll discover how to listen carefully to other people’s stories, and learn different ways to share those stories with others. We’ll read examples of oral histories, ranging from staged drama, video, photo collage and other forms of narrative, to unlock certain patterns and techniques.  We will watch videos from the Global Lives Project, and discuss how the videos build empathy in the viewers.

Then they’ll practice their interviewing skills to prep for the big project: meeting with somebody in their family or community, and transforming that interview into a monologue, play, video, photo journal, or short story.
